Dr. Elke Bojanowski
Student of Biology at the Free
University of Berlin,
Major Subjects: Ethology, Communication, Marine Ecology and Animal Physiology
She came to Egypt in Jun 94 for scientific work for the Masters and
Ph.D. theses in the "International Laboratory for Dolphin Behaviour Research" in
Eilat, Israel.
Since
April 2004
she is working
as a dive guide on Red Sea liveaboards. In the fall of 2004 she started the
Longimanus-Project.
The idea is to catalogue as many
individuals as possible to learn more about migration patterns, life span,
reproduction strategies and so on. Little is known about these magnificent
creatures and the learning process is thrilling. The method used is similar to
finger printing techniques but with the shark it's the white markings on the
fins that is used for recognition. With the amount of digital cameras in under
water housings these days there are plenty of photographs out there that can
help building this catalogue. What is needed is a shot from the side (left or
right side doesn't matter), date and place when the picture was taken.
